IRISH TRADITIONAL MUSIC AWARENESS AND ACTIVITY WORKSHOPS FOR JUNIOR MEMBERS

 

Venue:           St. Colmcille’s Community School, Scholarstown      Road, Knocklyon

Date:                Saturday 15th November 2014

Age Group:    Young musicians between 9 and 12 welcome (4th, 5th and 6th class)

MUSIC AWARENESS AND ACTIVITY WORKSHOP PROGRAMME WILL INCLUDE:

  • EMPHASIS ON FUN AND ENJOYMENT RATHER THAN JUST LEARNING TUNES

  • LISTENING - LEARNING BY EAR – GROUP PLAYING

  • LEARNING TO RECOGNISE TUNE TYPES - REELS, JIGS, HORNPIPES ETC

  • IMPORTANCE OF RHYTHM / DANCING - LINKING WITH TUNE TYPES

  • OPPORTUNITY TO TRY OUT DIFFERENT INSTRUMENTS

  • GUEST STORYTELLER

  • PROGRAMME ALSO INCLUDES LUNCHTIME AND EVENING RECITALS

 

PROGRAMME OUTLINE

11:00 – 11:30 Registration

11:30 – 11:45  Welcome from workshop teacher / outline of day’s activities

11:45 – 12:15 Importance of learning by ear / tips on how to listen / recognising tune types / learning short piece by ear

12:15 – 12:45 Dancing / importance of rhythm / focus on polka, jig, reel / clapping, tapping, lilting / watch some dance steps / see and hear the link between music and dance / learn simple two-hand dance

12:45 – 13:00 Mini break –  juice / water / fruit will be provided

13:00 – 13:30 Instruments module / focus on fiddle and accordion / demonstration by U18 musicians / mini session / listening and playing together / focus on common tunes / pupils to nominate two tunes from Craobh Naithí yellow book on application form for inclusion in session

13:30 – 14:00  Guest Storyteller – Niall de Búrca

14:00 – 14:45  Lunch Break – Children to bring own packed lunch

14:45 – 15:30  Lunchtime Recital Featuring Visiting Tutors

19:00 – 21:00 Evening Recital in Divine Word Parish Centre, Marley Grange.
